Byron gave to Robert Charles Dallas (his nephew by marriage) an important group of letters that he had written to his mother during his eastern travels. Dallas proposed to publish these letters after Byron's death, with some of his own and his recollections of the life of Byron from 1808 to 1814, but was forestalled by the poet's executors, and the publication of this book was stopped in England by a decree obtained by them in the Court of Chancery.. Dallas died in 1824, the same year as Lord Byron, shortly after the injunction was issued. Determined to see the book in print, his son, the Anglican Priest Alexander R.C. Dallas, took the manuscript to Paris where A. & W. Galignani (booksellers of English origin, installed in France since the Restoration since 1815, specialized in the importation of English works and newspapers, sometimes prohibited by the censure) issued it as Correspondence of Lord Byron, with a Friend, including his Letters to his Mother. Our copy is part of this edition.
